What should I buy for a party?

Start with the whole event

A useful party shopping list covers food, drinks, ice, serving pieces, tableware, bathrooms, cleaning, waste and leftovers—not only the menu.

What people forget

Ice, openers, serving spoons, kitchen roll, toilet paper, bin bags, storage containers and a marker for cups are the repeat offenders.

Food and guest count

Food changes with the format. Pizza portions, snack weight, buffet pieces and BBQ items need different assumptions; longer parties also need more grazing food.

Drinks and ice

Plan a varied mix rather than a drinking target. Keep serving ice separate from cooler ice, provide water, and buy toward the higher end outdoors or in hot weather.
